3 Chunky Crochet Cowl Patterns

When I visited the Lion Brand outlet in January, I purchased the One & Done Swipe Right Crochet Cowl kit.  I was so pleased with my first cowl that I decided to make cowls for my best friends.  The yarn (Chillax weight 5) included in the One & Done kit is not sold separately, so the ladies at the Lion Brand outlet helped me find a suitable substitution.  They are lovely ladies who are knowledge about the yarn and take the time to answer your questions.  I used Wool-Ease yarn and modified the pattern from the One & Done kit to make these 3 chunky crochet cowls.

This crochet cowl is a good beginner project because it uses one stitch – the single crochet.  Each cowl took about two hours to make.

Cowl #1:  To make the black cowl above, you will need:

Chain 67.  Single crochet in the 2nd chain from the hook and in each chain across – 66 single crochet stitches.

Row 1:  Chain 1, turn, single crochet in the first stitch, single crochet in the back loop only of each stitch to the last stitch, single crochet in the last stitch.  Repeat Row 1 until the cowl measures 10″ from the beginning.

Fasten off, leaving a long yarn tail.  Thread the yarn tail into the blunt needle.  Sew the short edge to the long edge using an invisible sewn seam.  Weave in yarn tails.

Cowl measures 10″ x 33″ before sewing.

Pattern Source:  Lion Brand One & Done Swipe Right Crochet Cowl Kit.

Cowl #2:  For the above cowl, I used two skeins of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn (weight 6 super bulky) in Fig and N crochet hook.

Follow the same pattern as Cowl #1 with the following modifications:

  • Start with chain 57 (56 single crochet stitches).
  • Repeat Row 1 until the cowl measures 8″ from the beginning.

Cowl measures 8″ x 31″ before sewing.

At the Lion Brand outlet, they have computers where you can look up and print free patterns (two patterns per person).  The Perfectly Simple Crochet Hat is made with one skein of Wool-Ease Chunky yarn and N crochet hook.  With this pattern, you can make multiple sizes for children and adults.  I’m wearing a S/M adult hat.  The hat and cowl are a great set.

Cowl #3:  For this cowl, I used one skein of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick yarn (weight 6 super bulky) in Cranberry and N crochet hook.

Follow the same pattern as Cowl #1 with the following modifications:

  • Start with chain 57 (56 single crochet stitches)
  • Repeat Row 1 until the cowl measures 7″ from the beginning.

Cowl measures 7″ x 31″ before sewing.

Child-Sized Cowl:  I couldn’t resist making a child-sized version of this cowl for Sofia.  Cowls are great for kids because they slip on easily.

For Sofia’s  cowl, I used one skein of Wool-Ease Chunky yarn (weight 5) in Black and N crochet hook.

Follow the same pattern as Cowl #1 with the following modifications:

  • Start with chain 48 (47 single crochet stitches)
  • Repeat Row 1 until the cowl measures 6″ from the beginning.

Cowl measures 7″ x 22″ before sewing.

This cowl is warm without being bulky.  It can be worn in the Winter, then transition to the early Spring when it’s chilly in the mornings.  It’s a unique accessory you and your friends will love.

Happy Crocheting!

Jackie
