Easy Sugar Scrub Recipe
For the first time last winter, my heels were dry and cracked. It was an uncomfortable feeling, which I had to address right away. After some online research, I decided to make an easy sugar scrub recipe. I exfoliated in the shower, then applied Aquaphor cream before bed. After a couple of weeks, my heels looked great. This season, I’m prepared with a new batch of sugar scrub and made extra to give to my girlfriends as holiday gifts.
You will need
- A microwave
- Pyrex measuring cup (4 cup)
- Spatula
- Measuring spoons and cups
- Cutting board
- Knife or scraper
- 2 cups sugar
- 1 cup melt and pour goats milk soap base
- 1/2 cup olive oil
- 1 teaspoon essential oil or fragrance (optional)
- Colorants (optional)
- 4 oz mason jars or air tight containers
Step 1: Melt the Soap Base
Melt and pour soap bases are sold in 2 lb blocks. The soap bases have score lines in the mold, so they’re easy to cut and measure.
Remove from the package and cut into two 1 lb pieces. Then, cut a 1 lb piece in half to yield 1 cup of soap. Place the soap on your cutting board and cut into 1″ pieces using a knife or scraper.
Place the soap in your Pyrex measuring cup and microwave according to the package instructions. I microwaved my goats milk soap base for 30 seconds on high, then in 10-second intervals until all the soap was melted. As you melt the soap, stir it to remove any small clumps and scrape the sides of the measuring cup.
For this project, I chose goats milk, because it moisturizes and soothes dry and damaged skin. There are a lot of soap base options available online and at your local craft store, including shea butter, avocado, and olive oil.
Step 2: Add Scent, Colorant, and Oil to Soap Base
Add essential oil or fragrance, and olive oil to the melted soap base.
I prefer to use essential oils for homemade scrubs and soaps. They are a natural alternative, which are 100% pure, plant based, and gluten and paraben free. I prefer to keep scrubs and soaps a natural color, so I don’t use colorant.
Step 3: Add Sugar
Fold the sugar into the soap mixture a little at a time, removing any clumps as you go. You want to achieve a sandy texture.
This recipe yields approximately 32 oz of scrub.
Packaging the Sugar Scrub
Place the scrub in an air tight glass or plastic container. The 4 oz mason jars are a great size for gifting. I encourage you to recycle your beauty containers for this project, especially if they have peel off labels. It’s an environmentally friendly way to reuse a container, which would otherwise go into the landfill.
Make Labels Using Cricut Printable Vinyl
These 4 oz mason jars were holiday gifts, so I wanted to add a pretty label. The original design is a free PDF. I modified the design to fit the 4 oz mason jar lids. I used Cricut printable vinyl and Design Space to make these labels. Please note you need to have a Design Space account to view and access my project.
Benefits of Exfoliating
In the winter, skin becomes dehydrated from exposure to cold air outdoors and dry air indoors. A sugar scrub exfoliant is less abrasive and dissolves in warm water, making it ideal for use in the shower. By exfoliating, you are removing dead cells and replenishing your skin, improving its ability to absorb moisturizers.
Keep your skin exfoliated and moisturized with this easy sugar scrub and homemade goats milk soap. Make them part of your winter skin care routine for smooth hydrated skin. You’ll want to make enough to share with your girlfriends.
Happy Crafting!
